How to do it

Lift the heels for a full one-second pause before lowering.

  1. 1

Stand on a raised surface (like a step) with the balls of your feet on the edge and heels hanging off, holding onto a chair for balance.

  2. 2

Raise your heels as high as possible by contracting your calf muscles.

  3. 3

Lower your heels below the level of the step to stretch your calves.

  4. 4

Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Expert tip

Press through the balls of your feet and avoid bouncing at the bottom to maintain tension on the calf muscles.

Common mistakes

  • ✕Bending the knees during the raise
  • ✕Rolling the ankles outward at the top
  • ✕Leaning your body weight heavily on the chair
