How to do it

Inhale on the way up and exhale smoothly as you lower the weight.

  1. 1

Lie sideways on an incline bench with your lower arm supporting your head and the other arm holding a dumbbell at your side.

  2. 2

Raise the dumbbell out to the side with a slight bend in your elbow until it is parallel with the floor.

  3. 3

Hold the position briefly at the top, then lower the dumbbell back to the starting position.

  4. 4

Complete the desired number of repetitions before switching sides.

Expert tip

Perform the movement with a controlled tempo, and avoid using momentum to lift the weight. Keep your core engaged to stabilize your body on the bench.

Common mistakes
