How to do it

Space your hands evenly on the bar and set your feet apart.

  1. 1

Stand facing a cable machine with the pulley set above head height.

  2. 2

Grab the bar or rope attachment with both hands, arms fully extended.

  3. 3

Keeping your arms straight, pull the bar down to your thighs, engaging your lats.

  4. 4

Slowly return the bar to the starting position, maintaining tension on the lats.

  5. 5

Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Expert tip

Focus on keeping your arms straight and using your lats to pull the weight down, rather than relying on your biceps or momentum.

Common mistakes

  • ✕Rocking the torso back and forth for momentum
  • ✕Letting the bar drift forward on the return
  • ✕Flexing the wrists during the pulldown
